The Mysteries of Nazca
In the desert of Peru,300 kilometers from Lima, one of the most unusual artworks in the world has
mystified(迷惑)people for decades.__________ (46) But from high above, these marks are huge images
of birds, fish, seashells, all beautifully carved into the earth.
The Nazca lines are so difficult to see from the ground that they weren't discovered until the 1930s,
when pilots spotted them while flying over the area. In all, there are about 70 different human and animal
figures on the plain, along with 900 triangles, circles, and lines.
Researchers have figured out that the lines are at least 1 ,500 years old,but their purpose is still a mystery.
____________(47)However,it would probably be very tricky to land a spaceship in the middle of pictures of
dogs and monkeys.
In the 1940s,an American explorer named Paul Kosok suggested that the drawings are a chronicle
(記錄)of the movement of the stars and planets.__________(48) Later, an astronomer tested his theory
with a computer, but he couldn't find any relation between the lines and movements in space.
Another explanation is that the lines may have been made for religious reasons.British researcher Tony
Morrison investigated the customs of people in the Andes Mountain and learned that they sometimes pray by
the side of the road. It's possible that in the past, the lines of Nazca were created for a similar purpose.
__________(49)But the local people have never constructed anything this big.
Recently, two other scientists,David Johnson and Steve Mabee, have speculated that lines could have
been related to water. Nazca is one of the driest places in the world and receives only 2cm of rain every
year. While Johnson was searching for ancient water sources in the area,he noticed that some waterways
built by ancient people were connected with the lines.Johnson believes that the Nazca lines are a giant map
of the underground water in the area.________(50)
__________(50)
A:Other scientists are now searching for evidence to prove this.
B:A Swiss writer named Erich Von Daniken wrote that the Nazca lines were designed as a landing place for UFOs.
C:Scholars differ in interpreting the purpose of the designs.
D:The largest pictures may have been the sites for special ceremonies.
E:Seen from the ground,it looks like lines scratched into the earth.
F:He called Nazca"the largest astronomy book in the world".

Successful Language Learners
1.Some people seem to have a knack for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules or grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent than others,so what makes language learning so much easier for them?Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners,we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.
2.First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher;they discover their own way to learn the language.Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from mistakes.
3.Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language;they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to com-municate.They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things;they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
4.Finally,successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it.It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly because they want to learn with it.
5.What kind of language learner are you?If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully. On the other hand,if your language learning has been less than successful, you might as well try some of the techniques outlined above.
Successful language learners derive conclusions_________.
A:to discover sentence patterns and grammatical rules
B:to expand vocabulary
C:to use the target language
D:to encourage unsuccessful language learners to learn independently, actively and purposefully
E:from clues
F:to say strange things

How to Get Along Well With Your Boss
1 Before you argue with your boss, check with the boss's secretary to determine his mood.If he ate
nails for breakfast,it is not a good idea to ask him for something. Even without the boss's secretary, there
are keys to timing don't approach the boss when he's on deadline, don't go in right before lunch, when he
is apt to be distracted and rushed, don't go in just before or after he has taken a vacation.
2 Ifyou're mad,that will only make your boss mad.Calm down first.And don't let a particular
concern open the floodgates for all your accumulated frustration. The boss will feel that you think negatively
about the company and it is hopeless trying to change your mind. Then maybe he will dismiss you.
3 Terrible disputes can result when neither the employer nor the employee knows what is the problem
the other wants to discuss.Sometimes the fight will go away when the issues are made clear. The employee
has to get his point across clearly in order to make the boss understand it.
4 Your boss has enough on his mind without your adding more.If you can't put forward an immediate
solution,at least suggest how to approach the problem.People who frequently present problems without solu-
tions to their bosses may soon find they can't get past the secretary.
5 To deal effectively with a boss,it's important to consider his goals and pressures. If you can put
yourself in the position of being a partner to the boss, then he will be naturally more inclined to work with
you to achieve your goals.

How We Form First Impression
We all have first impression of someone、just met.But why? Why do we form an opinion about someone without really knowing anything about him or her aside perhaps from a few remarks or readily observable traits?
The answer is related to how your brain allows you to be~of the world.Your brain is so sensitive in picking up facial traits,Even very minor difference in how a person'5 eyes, ears, nose,or mouth are placed in relation to each other makes you see him or her as different. In fact, your brain continuously processes incoming sensory information-the sights and sounds of your world. These incoming signals are compared against a host of "memories"stored in the brain areas called the cortex(皮質)system to determine what these new signals"mean".
If you see someone you know and like at school, your brain says"familiar and safe".If you see someone new it says,"new and potentially threatening".Then your brain starts to match features of this stranger with other"known"memories. The height, weight, dress, ethnicity, gestures, and tone of voice are all matched up.The more unfamiliar the characteristics are,the more your brain may say,"This is new.I don ' t like this person ".Or else , " I'm intrigued(好奇的)".Or your brain may perceive a new face but familiar clothes,ethnicity,gestures-like your other friends;so your brain says,"I like this person".But these preliminary"impressions"can be dead wrong.
When we stereotype people,we use a less mature form of thinking(not unlike the immature thinking of a very young child)that makes simplistic and categorical impressions of others.Rather than learn about the depth and breadth of people-their history, interest
values,strengths,and true character-we categorize them as jocks(騙子),peeks(反常的人),or freaks(怪人).
However,if we resist initial stereotypical impressions,we have a chance to be aware of what a person is truly like.If we spend time with a person, hear about his or her life, hopes, dreams, and become aware of the person's character,we use a different, more mature style of thinking-and the most complex areas of our cortex, which allow us to be humane。
If you meet a stranger with familiar gestures, your brain is most likely to say________.
A:"He is familiar and safe."
B:"He is new and potentially threatening."
C:"I like this person."
D:"This is new.I don't like this person."

Milosevic's Death
Former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic was found dead last Saturday in his cell at the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The 64-year-old had been on trial there since February 2002.Born in provincial Pozarevac in 1941,he was the second son of a priest and a school teacher.
Both of his parents died when he was still a young adult. The young Milosevic was"untypical", says Slavoljub Djukic, his unofficial biographer. He was"not interested in sports, avoided excursions(短途旅行)and used to come to school dressed in the old-fashioned way一white shirt and tie."One of his old friends said,he could "imagine him as a station-master or punctilious(一絲不茍的)civil servant."Indeed that is exactly what he might have become, had he not married Mira. She was widely believed to be his driving force.
At university and beyond he did well.He worked for various firms and was a communist party member. By 1986 he was head of Serbia's Central Committee. But still he had not yet really been noticed. It was Kosovo that gave him his chance. An autonomous province of Serbia,Kosovo was home to an Albanian majority and a Serbian minority. In 1989,he was sent there to calm fears of Serbians who felt they were discriminated against. But instead he played the nationalist card and became their champion. In so doing, he changed into a ruthless(無情的)and determined man. At home with Mira he plotted the downfall of his political enemies. Conspiring(密謀)with the director of Serbian TV,he mounted a modern media campaign which aimed to get him the most power in the country.
He was elected Serbian president in 1990.In 1997,he became president of Yugoslavia. The rest of the story is well-known:his nationalist card caused Yugoslavia's other ethnic groups to fight for their own rights, power and lands.Yugoslavia broke up when four of the six republics declared independence in 1991.War started and lasted for years and millions died. Then Western countries intervened.NATO bombed Yugoslavia, and he eventually stepped down as state leader in 2000.Soon after this,Serbia's new government, led by Zoran Djindjic, arrested him and sent him to face justice at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in the Hague.
Which of the following is NOT true of the young Milosevic?
A:He dressed in a pretty old-fashioned way.
B:He was not interested in sports.
C:He often avoided excursions.
D:He was extremely ambitious.

Life Connected With Computer
After too long on the Net,even a phone call can be a shock. My boyfriend's Liverpudlian accent sud- denly becomes indecipherable after the clarity of his words on screen,a secretary's tone seems more rejectingthan I'd imagined it would be.Time itself becomes fluid-hours become minutes, and alternately secondsstretch into days.Weekends, once a highlight of my week, are now just two ordinary days.
For the last three years, since I stopped working as a producer for Charlie Rose,I have done much of mywork as a telecommuter.I submit articles and edit them via E-mail and communicate with colleagues on Internetmailing lists. My boyfriend lives in England,so much of our relationship is computer-mediated.
If I desired,I could stay inside for weeks without wanting anything.I can order food, and manage my money, love and work.In fact,at times I have spent as long as three weeks alone at home, going out only toget mail and buy newspapers and groceries.I watched most of the blizzard of 96 on TV.
But after a while, life itself begins to feel unreal I start to feel as though I've merged with my machines, taking data in,spitting them back out, just another node on the Net.Others online report the same symptoms. We start to strongly dislike the outside forms of socializing. It's like attending an A.A.meeting in a bar witheveryone holding a half-sipped drink. We have become the Net opponents'worst nightmare.
What first seemed like a luxury, crawling from bed to computer, not worrying about hair, clothes andface, has become an avoidance,a lack of discipline. And once you start replacing real human contact with cyber-interaction,coming back out of the cave can be quite difficult.
At times,I turn on the television and just leave it to chatter in the background, something that I'd neverdone previously. The voices of the programs soothe me,but then I'm jarred by the commercials.1 find myselfsucked in by soap operas,or compulsively needing to keep up with the latest news and the weather."Dateline,""Frontline","Nightline",CNN,New York 1,every possible angle of every story over and over, even when they areof no possible use to me.Work moves from foreground to background.
What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A:She is so absorbed in the TV programs that she often forgets her work.
B:In order to keep up with the latest news and the weather, she watches TV a lot.
C:in order to get some comfort from TV programs, she sometimes turns on the television.

Operatunity
1 Operatunity is a TV talent show for amateur opera singers. The winners get the chance to sing with
the English National Opera. When two housewives,Denise Leigh and Jane Gilchrist won in 2002,their lives
changed forever. As they sang Verdi's Rigoletto at the Coliseum(音樂廳)in Rome, they were transformed
from working mothers into opera celebrities(名人).
2 "I live in the village I was born in,"says Denise, who is blind."Lots of my neighbours are family,
and my life is all about my three children."Jane, who worked as a cleaner and a shop assistant, was in a similar
situation. She says,"All I had to look forward to was seeing my four children grow up,and I love that, but…
you think'there must be more to life'.Winning Operatunity has opened up avenues I never knew existed."
3 "This last year has been amazing,"Denise continues."Last mouth was Paris, before that we werere--
cording at Abbey Road,in London, and recently we had our album launch at the Royal Opera House."
"We've been treated like princesses,"laughs Jane.“…champagne,chocolates,five-star hotels…”
4 But it wasn't all so easy. For Denise, the worst part was waiting at the beginning."After I'd sent in
my application form I worried for a month. Then I had to wait ten days after my first audition(試唱).That
was awful."Even when they won the competition they were allowed to tell their close family but they weren't
allowed to tell anyone else until later. Denise and Jane also found the travelling difficult. They couldn't take
their children with them while they were away singing,so they had to organize childcare. However, there's
been no problem with the physical side of singing:"We didn't have to worry about that as we've had lots of
help and wonderful voice training,"says Jane. They also had to learn to deal with the media."The kids loved
the fact that they could stay up and watch us on TV,but I just couldn't understand why some newspapers
were more interested in the fact I divorced at 21,rather than the fact I had just sung at the Coliseum,"says
Denise.

Survey Found Many Women Misinformed About Cancer Sixty-three percent of American women think that if there's no family history of cancer, they're not likely to develop the disease,a new survey found. In fact, most people who develop cancer have no family history of cancer, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists ( ACOG)(美國婦產科醫師學會),which sponsored the survey.
"Too many women are dying from cancer,"Dr.Douglas W.Laube,ACOG's immediate past president, said during a Friday teleconference."An estimated 200,070 women will die in the U.S.this year, and over 600 , 078 women will be diagnosed with cancer. The results of this survey found a worrisome(令人擔憂的) gap in women's knowledge about cancer."
Based on the findings,ACOG is increasing its efforts to educate women about cancer and the need for regular screening tests.
Although the survey found many misconceptions(錯誤觀念)about cancer , 76 percent of women surveyed did say they feel knowledgeable about how they can reduce their risk of the disease. However, only 52 percent said they were doing enough to reduce that risk. And 10 percent said they hadn't done anything in the past years to lower their risk.17 percent said they wouldn't change their lifestyles, even if changes would lower their cancer risk. Many women said they were afraid to undergo screening out of fear of finding cancer.
Twenty percent said they didn't want to know if they had cancer. In response to these findings,ACOG will launch on Oct.29 a new website-Protect & Detect:What Women Should Know about Cancer. The guide is designed to help women to take charge of their health and improve their understanding of their risk of cancer-and the lifestyle steps they can take to cut that risk.
People with no family history of cancer are unlikely to develop cancer.

Communications Revolution
Cyberspace, data superhighway,multi-media一for those who have seen the future, the linking of computers
television and telephones will change our lives forever. Yet for all the talk of a forthcoming technological
utopia little attention has been given to the implications of these developments for the poor. As with all new
high technology, while the West concerns itself with the"how",the question of"for whom"is put aside
once again.
Economists are only now realizing the full extent to which the communications revolution has affected the
world economy.Information technology allows the extension of trade across geographical and industrial
boundaries, and transnational corporations take full advantage of it.Terms of trade, exchange and interest
rates and money movements are more important than the production of goods. The electronic economy made
possible by information technology allows the haves to increase their control on global markets一with destruc-
tive impact on the have-nots.
For them the result is instahiTity.Dcveioping countries which rely on the production of a small range of
goods for export are made to feel like small parts in the international economic machine. As"futures"are
traded on computer screens, developing countries simply have less and less control of their destinies.
So what are the options for regaining control? One alternative is for developing countries to buy in the
latest comnputers arid telecommunications themselves一so-called"development communications"moderniza-
tiori. Yet this leads to long-term dependency and perhaps permanent constraints on developing
countries' economies.
Communications technology is generally exported from the U.S.,Europe or Japan;the patents, skills
and ability to manufacture remain in the hands of a few industrialized countries. It is also expensive, and im-
ported products and servoces must therefore be bought on credit一credit usually provided by the very coun-
tries vhose companies stand to gain.
Furthermore, when new technology is introduced there is often too low a level of expertise to exploit it
for native development. This means that while local elites, foreign communities and subsidiaries of transna-
tional corporations may benefit, those whose lives depend on access to the information are denied by it.
The author's attitude toward the communications revolution is_________.
A:tolerant
B:indifferent
C:positive
D:critical
